The AMAs
got the media and social networking sites going for the past few weeks about the
heavily loaded bill of acts and super stars advertised for the 2009 awards show.
So when news broke out that Gambia's rising star Singhateh was to perform at the show, it wowed almost
everyone.
Singhateh was tasked with the biggest mission of his
career. To go and fly the Gambian flag sky high at the AMAs.
"Mission Impossible" you might want to think, considering all those big mighty
Afro stars and acts from all around Africa, EU and USA on the same bill. But
after what we witnessed @ the Troxy. We would advise you to give it to Singhateh.
By the time we got
backstage, Singhateh was already well popular after stunning other
acts during his sound check earlier that evening. A few moments
after we caught up with him in his dressing room, it was time for
his performance.
He zoomed out of the room after a pretty blond lady came calling.
And the next thing, there he was on the stage. A very short
humbled intro of himself and The Gambia was followed by a magical moment. The rich sounds of his heavy
deep rooted afro-manding-mbalax
Big hit "Live it up" filled the magnificent luxurious
venue and brought it alive. His contracted dancer(Elli) on the elevated rear deck of
the stage went wild. The crowd especially ladies in the VIP area where Micheal Essien
and others sat also got into the groove. Trust me, "Hips
don't lie" , so we've captured some of the moves live in millions of pixels
to prove it.
At around the halfway point of the song Freaky when into overdrive and
absolutely murdered the AMA. It was a fantastic performance that truly represented
The Gambia in the finest possible piece of musical wizardry.
Well done Singhateh (Mr. Freaky) you did us all proud. Amongst the big stars who attended include, Michael Essien(Chelsea), Dwain Chambers, Tinchy Stryder(UK
rising star), Daniel Shitu(Bolton), Amir Diab
(Egyptian Super star), JJC
Skill, Eddy Kadi (Nigerian comedian / Show host).. etc. Absentees
were Youssou Ndure, Akon and Eve.
Congrats to Youssou Ndoure for winning the life time achievement award and Waka
Jagne who won Best African Promoter 2009. It was a win win night for both of the
SeneGambian nominees and a milestone for the remarkable Singhateh.
