Q: Mr LKJ your real name is Ebra Taal, how did you get the name LKJ?
A: Well the name LKJ came from a musician, who was a dub poet who faught for the
rights of black people in the UK. Full name Linclon Kwasi Johnson.
Q: How long have you been a Dj-ing?
A: I ‘ve been a DJ for long time, you know. I would say about 16years.
Q: Who or what inspired you?
A: I’m a music lover and so I had lots of music with a system for my own use.
People, mostly family saw that and started asking me to play music for them when
they had parties. I remember at first, I used to say hey! I’m not a DJ, but they
wouldn’t stop. When I play for some one at a party and some one else hear me
play, the next time they have a party they they’ll contact me. So it just went
on and on, that’s how I became a Dj.
Q: Are you a specialist?
A: I’m an all rounder, so I play everything, for different nationalities. But if
you ask me for my favourite that most be Reggae, vocal Reggae, that’s what I
enjoy playing more. But when I play in “Hews like “Ngenteh” I play more Mbalax
and I love it too.
Q: Turn tables or Dual CD players?
A: Turn tables to be quiet honest, when it’s available. But you can’t carry them
to everywhere you play, so I use more Cds nowadays because of the technology has
got better and they are easier to carry and play anywhere.
Q: You played at the recent “Sangmarie” event. How was it?
A: Man, the “Sangmarie” show was wicked. This was the second time I’ve play for
them at that event, but trust me this was the best. They had Musa Mboob playing
first and after that it was straight to the Hall Where I entertained people till
daybreak. Next year is the 10th anniversary, so they saying it’s
going to be a two days thing, back-to-back. That’s going to be heavy.
Q: Most people know
you as a heavy weight club Dj, but I understand you like playing at kids parties
too.
A: As a Dj you have to be versatile and fit in any where they put you in. Most
kids are into MTV Base so I know what to play for them to get them going.
Q: Do you promote Gambian music when you Dj.
A: Oh yes! I always play Gambian music when I play. I used to play a lot of Mass
lo Musa Mboob, Maslabi etc, but now I’m playing more Jaliba Kuyateh. As a Dj,
all I can do to promote Gambian artists is playing their music. I wish I could
do more but unfortunately I'm not a Promoter. I just wish I could do it all by
myself. If the promoters can help more by bringing Gambian artist here that
would be nice.
Q: Have you been Dj-ing in the Gambia?
A: Yeah even quiet recently, last December, I played at the Reggae night
alongside Pices in the Gambia at Destiny’s and at the Semester Party.
Q: Who is your Favourite Gambian artist or group?
A: My favourite used to be Mas La Bi but now, I’ve got two new favourites NJie B
and Freaky Joe. You might not know them because they are new sensations but
respect to you still because you guys started the thing back in the days respect
to you Daddy Elie.
Q: How do you see the Senegambian showbiz industry?
A: It’s in chaos at the moment but I hope the promoters will one day come
together and clear the situation and bring back the one love and harmony.
Q: What’s in the pipeline?
A: Nothing much because it’s soon gonna be “Ramadan” and I don’t play in
“Ramadan” not even for a million pound. There will be something after the
Ramadan but I’m not yet sure. You’ll be the first to know anyway.
L.K.J> Big up to UKG, all the promoters and to all my fans. Respect to
you Daddy Elie. Thank you.
