Exclusive interview
with beauty queen Sally Yolande' |
Gambia
1 Senegal 1.This is a score line you gonna have to get used to, because when
it comes to beauty our two countries can always go pound for pound. In 2006 Miss Jorr Jaiteh won the maiden edition of Miss Senegambia Uk
and made Gambia so proud. But this year the crown was lost to Senegal, when a stunningly
beautiful 19 years old Senegalese beauty queen by the name Sally Yollande out
shined the 8 beautiful contestants who took part in the 2007 edition. Miss sally
is a very sharp and naturally beautiful young model who bears all the hallmarks
of a feature Super model. Ukg caught up with pretty Sally for an exclusive
interview .
Daddy Elie: How
old are you?
Sally:
I’m 19
Daddy Elie: Where
did you grow up?
Sally: I grew
up in Senegal Dakar, I lived there until I was thirteen and I came over to
England in 2001 and I’ve been living here, near Brighton ever since.
Daddy Elie: You sound very much Gambian to me.
Sally: I’m Senegalese and my parents are. ”laughs….
Daddy Elie:
What do you do for living, if I may ask?
Sally: I have done a few things but at the moment
I’m a supervisor in a supermarket, I’m in charge of a lot of cash handling,
taking care of my staff and stuff.
Daddy Elie: Are
you studying?
Sally: I have recently finished my courses at
college and at the moment I’m taking a year out and just doing things that I
like, modelling, singing, dancing and stuff.
Daddy Elie: What
modelling have you done and for who?
Sally: I’ve done something with casting agencies
just for work here and there, and I’ve modelled for Brighton & Hove Black
Beauty fashion show and came out second, ‘I was pretty close, but I got a bit
closer this time and won Miss Senegambia Uk. ”laughs….
Daddy Elie: What inspired you to take part in
the Miss Senegambia beauty pageant?
Sally: I was delighted to here that something like that is taking place
here in England and because I was feeling a bit away from home and not being
able to connect with my people, so when the opportunity came to represent my
country, I just had to jumped at it.
Daddy Elie: Were you confident that you would
win the competition?
Sally: I hoped to do well but when I got there and saw how everybody got
together, I thought I’ll just do this for fun instead of pure competition, but
I wanted to represent for my country because my identity and where I’m from
means a lot to me.
Daddy Elie: How
did you see the whole thing?
Sally: I think it was
well organised and very successful. It was nice for something like that to take
place and the way people responded to it was amazing. As a small community it
brought us together even closer.
Daddy Elie: Would you represent your country in an
international beauty pageant?
Sally: If the chance presented itself, I definitely will. Girls have
their insecurities and I know It will be nerve racking and but if the
opportunity came I think I would jump at the chance, yes again.
Daddy Elie: What
would you like to say to Senegambian ladies about beauty pageants, because
Senegambia is a land of beauty, but we don’t seem to see many ladies coming
out to take part.
Sally: What I would like to say to them is that, if you have insecurities
and doubts about taking part in beauty pageants. Know that beauty comes from
within, so it doesn’t matter how you look, just feel beautiful and it will shine
right out of you and every one can see how beautiful Senegambians are.
Daddy Elie: What are your career ambitions and
how do you plan to realise them?
Sally: I am trying to get into modelling but I’ve not been that motivated
at times. So I think I need to start getting out there and register with more
agencies instead of just doing only photo shoots, because photos doesn’t say
much about you. So I have to get myself out there and try to make it as a
model. OR i can be a linguist because I studied languages at college and I speak
five languages.
Daddy Elie: What was the proudest moment of
life?
Sally: Being born African is what I’m most proud of.
Daddy Elie: Most embarrassing / funniest moment?
Sally: “laughs….. Now you
making me think so hard, ok how about this? We all know about African women and
their extensions right, being in class with your mates and everybody is talking
about your hair and touching it and all of a sudden, you feel that one has come
off and you just fold it and to put it in your pocket or purse discretely and
act like you itching your head. That’s very embarrassing “laughs..
.“laughs…..
Daddy Elie:
“laughs….. Now that’s done the
trick embarrassing and funny
Daddy Elie:
Your Favourite music?
Sally: Rnb and Rap
Daddy Elie:
Favourite male Artist and why?
Sally: It used to
Micheal Jackson but now it’s Akon because he is a very good singer and he
is from Senegal, I keep telling everybody because he makes me very proud of my
country.
Daddy Elie: Favourite female Artist and why?
Sally: Witney Houston and Vivian. Vivian because her music is
modern, goes with the flow and she still sings in the native language. I love
good music. My favourite Witney song is Dance with somebody.
Daddy Elie: Any beauty secrets you would like to share?
Sally: Just be yourself and if you feel beautiful don’t be too
conscious of it.
Daddy Elie: If
you had a personal motto what would it be?
Sally:
“Life is beautiful, live it to the fullest.”
Daddy Elie: Word
of thanks?
Sally: First of all to
God and my Mom,
To everyone for choosing me, I really
appreciate it, Thank you.
To Saul Sounds for giving me this great
opportunity, Thank you so much.
