Exclusive interview with ukgambians.com
UkGambians.com have had the opportunity to talk to the winner
of the Miss SeneGambia UK 2006 contest which was held on the 18th
of February 2006. This event took place in east London, Stratford,
the home of the 2012 Olympics.
This
was a well organised and promoted event, courtesy of "Jolov Arts
Entertainment" with the presence of the Senegalese & Gambian High
Commissioner along with Pape Bouba Diop, the Fulham midfielder (who
should be playing for Arsenal really ) and have already been
televised on BEN TV. For some of you who missed the television
interview with the winner, UkGambians.com have had a chance to catch up
with our own Miss SeneGambia UK.
UkGambians.com:
Firstly, what is your view regarding
www.ukgambians.com being created as a virtual Gambian community?
Miss
SeneGambia:
Thanks a lot for giving me the opportunity to be featured in your
website, it is a great honour for me.
First of all, I would like to say a job well done to everyone that has
helped created this website, it is about time that Gambians in the
United Kingdom get an opportunity
like this one. This website
is a great tool that will help all of us, not just the Gambians in the
United Kingdom but also Gambians all over the world. It will help us in
terms of knowing about what's happening in our society and also it will
help us to know about what's happening in our home country Gambia.
UkGambians.com:
What would you like to see on this Virtual Gambian Community?
Miss SeneGambia:
I would like to see more news and information about Gambia. I would also
like to be updated about the different events that are happening there
as well. I think that it will also be interesting to see news clips from
GRTS if that is possible. Apart from that I cannot think of anything at
the moment because as far as I am concern, everything that I have always
wanted in a website is available on this one
UkGambian.com:
Jorr, you came over from Sweden not long ago and you won The first ever
UK Miss SeneGambia contest, how does that make you feel?
Miss
SeneGambia:
When I first thought about joining this competition, it was going to be
about having fun more than anything else but as time went by, I realised
that, this will give me an opportunity to make slight changes in our
community. This title is a great achievement for me and it is a
privilege for me as well. I have to say that am really honoured to
receive such a title and it also shows that, people in our community are
ready for some change and who else to make those changes than a younger
generation of Gambians in the United Kingdom.
UkGambians.com:
Coming from Sweden and winning, is that a confident booster or do you
consider yourself to be a UK girl now?
Miss
SeneGambia: Though, I've lived in
Gambia, Sweden and now England, I have always been very proud of my
cultural heritage so this competition does not make me neither a Swedish
girl nor a UK girl but it just shows that am a true SeneGambian, which
is why I have been chosen to represent these two great countries
UkGambians.com:
Do you intend to go back to Sweden?
Miss
SeneGambia:
At the present moment, I consider England to be my home, so at this
moment, I really don’t have any plans of going back to Sweden any time
soon, but I might eventually go back in the future
UkGambians.com:
Why did you come over to London?
Miss
SeneGambia:
I've always wanted to study
law and as i mentioned earlier, i love my country, Gambia a lot so I
thought that moving down here will increase my chances of moving back
home because since we were colonised by the British, i believe that our
laws are a bit similar compared to Sweden where the laws are totally
different
UkGambians.com:
Where and what are you currently studying?
Miss SeneGambia:
At in my second year
studying LLB Law at the University of Luton.
UkGambians.com:
What would be your ideal job title after your studies?
Miss
SeneGambia:
My ideal job title would be a barrister once am finished with my
studies.
UkGambians.com:
Where would you like to work., London, Sweden or Gambia?
Miss
SeneGambia:
I would like to gain some experience here in England first and then
eventually move to Gambia
UkGambians.com
What benefits, if any has this victory brought to you?
Miss
SeneGambia:
I have had the privilege to meet the Gambia High Commissioner, whom I've
always wanted to meet, I've had an interview with Ben TV, which was a
lot of fun and I've also been featured in a newspaper which was very
exciting for me
UkGambians.com:
What convinced you to take place?
Miss
SeneGambia:
As the days for the
competition were coming closer, i was feeling a bit reluctant to join
but the support that I had from my friends and family meant a lot to me
and it gave me more reason to join this competition.
UkGambians.com:
Last but not least, how exactly did you spend your price money
J?
Miss SeneGambia:
Well, shopping of course but I shared some with my family and a few
close friends
UkGambian.com
would like to take this opportunity to thank Jorr for her participation
in this interview.
