 Pencha Bi's Ex-Hardcore Rapper: "Flexman"

Formally known as 'Hardo Ranks' and 'Principal'

SO Who is Flexman?

Pa Manjai Sey aka Flx-man was born on 16th January 1980 in Banjul, the Capital City of the Gambia, West Africa. He attended Albion primary School where he sat for the Primary School Leaving Certificate Examination and obtained the pass mark, which gained him entry into Hermann Gmeiner Technical High School in Bakoteh.

Three years after, he successfully completed high school with good merits. This got him enrolled at the International Business College (IBC) on a Business Information Technology course where he obtained a HNC certificate in Business Information Technology and proceeded to Stockport  College  of Further and Higher Education in Manchester - England, where he did his Higher National Diploma (HND) in Business Information Technology.

Flx-Man has been in the music industry for over thirteen years. He started doing music when he was at high school, and simultaneously hosting a radio show called Pencha B Reggae and Ragga showcase at Citizen FM in Kanifing Layout.

After two years of hosting this Radio Show he decided to form a musical group with some of his colleagues and came up with the name Pencha B.

Pencha B became undoubtedly one of the best and most successful musical groups in the Gambia, and most proficient in creating outstanding blends of purely African flavours in ragga, reggae and hip hop.

His grounding as a professional artist began during these years. His commitment and love for music always pushed him to research, so as to have a stronger grip and broaden his horizon to the requirements of music. As such, he personally wrote and arranged most of the songs done by the group PENCHA B, which released five albums namely, Chossan ken du mome, Nyohou Borome, Slavery, Kairo Songs of the Gambia and finally Mann ak Yow which was done in collaboration with another group called Dancehall Masters.

The group's dexterity and remarkable artistry earned it the opportunity to be invited to conduct a musical tour of Scandinavia in 2002. Crowds were stunned with pure lyrical prowess accompanied with natural and original sounds of unrefined Africa.

After being in a group for almost thirteen years, Flx-Man decided to pursue a solo Career and his ability to play musical instruments like the acoustic guitar gave him the drive to personally create two outstanding albums of his own - namely: Tribal War and Ndawyi both of these albums which were written, arranged, recorded and mixed by M studios - gained renowned successes.

The type of hip hop I make and what my lyrics are about.

My music is based on a typical wollof -Talif on hip hop beats, reggae, dancehall, folk and some times I blend in some nice acoustic songs both in English and wollof. As an artist, my main focus is on creativity and originality.

His strong and very rich West African heritage that has stunned the entire world is an invaluable source of great inspiration. "As an artist, my environment and history has motivated me to capture those factors that influences the everyday life of my own people in my music. These include, war, poverty, disease, corruption, marital disagreements, domestic violence and other social vices. I equally ensure the portrayal of the pretty part of my surrounding in my songs. Such as, beauty, rich culture, hard working, decent livelihood, hospitality etc."

"The whole idea behind what I call Talif-Hip hop both the music and lyrics is based on issues that are affecting Humanity/mankind and the physical environment that has endured so much abuse and misuse as a result of human activity.

"In my own words I define Talif-Hip Hop as (the art of life)"

Upcoming releases

Flx-Man's ambition is to revolutionize the entire showbiz and multimedia scenario in The Gambia to a livelier, more creative, more innovative and original concept that would earn the respect and recognition of all and sundry.

Part of my plans for the very near future is the release of my third solo album. This album shall be titled Deaga Nga Mba?

The album will be an eight-track album in which all the songs/Lyrics will be built around our local languages, mainly wollof, which is the main business local language within the Senegambia region.

Both the album title and the promotional Slogan is Deaga Nga Mba? Which simply means have you heard? As the title suggests, all songs shall entail messages that are very positive, and equally appealing to both young and old, intellectual or otherwise.
