Amie
Dibba known to some as Amina, is an inspiring young woman that is determined to
make positive change in the life of the average Gambian female. At age 21, she
has gained so much admiration, fame, popularity and respect from her mates and
younger ones. Amie was born of Gambian parents in Texas but has lived in
Minnesota since the age of two.
Unlike most who would connect to or take the Americanism, Amie has decided to
stay connected to her roots and strongly states “I AM GAMBIAN!“. She emerged as
the first ever MISS GAMBIA USA in May of 2006 in Maryland and continues to
volunteer her time with the Miss Gambia USA LLC organization. What is amazing
about Amie is her dexterity and versatility as she does quite a lot of things
all of which she is very good at. She is currently working with the African
Broadcasting Network-America as the Director of Music and Master Control
Operator.
During one of her recent trips to The Gambia, she was able to cover the African
Union summit and also interviewed about 17 local talents. Amie is indeed a role
model who is very humble, hard working and focused. Volunteering her time to
write for and contribute to the GambianTalent website is also something she
takes great pride in. She is presently attending University of Wisconsin-River
Falls as a Senior majoring in Marketing Communications with a minor in Mass
Communications.
Young Amie Dibba is also a musician. She has already produced 10 promotional
singles by herself on her computer. “My first love was music. My goal is to
become a national recording artist. At this time, I am teaching myself how to
produce and arrange music. I focus strongly on writing meaningful as well as
catchy lyrics that draw the attention of the listeners and connect with them and
their experiences. I know that with much practice and motivation my skills will
become much better,” said Amie. She started singing at the age of 6. She sang in
a choir for 7 years. “For 4 years I was a member of a singing group last known
by me to be called “Harmonie”. In 2001, the group’s name changed to “VOICES”.
Voices opened a show for National recording artists Jagged edge, did
performances at a local jazz bar called Arnelia’s, and were listed as main the
entertainment for a Father’s Day show.
B-Rich of Baby Honey Records had expressed interest in Voices after watching
them perform during the Jagged Edge concert. After many years, Amie decided to
leave Harmonie to follow a new and more conducive path in order for her to
better follow her dreams. In early 2004, Amie and Dynasty, a former band-mate
and friend performed backup for an artist in Minneapolis, Minnesota
(Double-Odd), he was the entertainer at a rap battle that was judged by Talib
Kweli.
This proud Gambian queen has a voice that shatters the hearts of mankind. Amie
has been doing music as a hobby and she believes in quality work. She is now set
to go to studio. Amie sings hip hop and R&B but Is open to try new things.
“Music is a huge part of my life and my dream and I am determined to succeed in
it with God's guidance, the support and prayers of my people and dedication. My
current project of music production, writing and arranging is one small step
towards my objective, but it takes those steps and dedication to get you
somewhere. I never expect things to be handed to me in life, work for what’s
yours. I truly am working for my love of music and I will enhance my skills and
develop myself as an artist in all ways possible. I pray to God that I may be
granted the opportunity to better enhance and develop my skills, I promise when
that happens, it will never be regretted.
Amie has been exclusively producing, writing and arranging all of her songs. She
is always open to trying out new sounds and working with different people. Amie
is always on the look out for hot new instrumentals and beats. “It’s an
investment,” said Amie. During her visit over the summer of '06 to the Gambia,
she performed alongside Singateh A.K.A Freaky Joe, opened up a show for
Senegalese female star Viviane N’dour as well as Senegalese male stars Pape
Diouf and Fallou Dieng whom she also did a duo with that night, one of Sierra
Leonian star Emmerson, and has been featured on GRTS Goudi Samdi hosted by
Ansumana Drammeh, the Daily Observer news paper, www.onegambia.com,
gambiantalents.com and visited with young Gambian youth and students as the
first Miss Gambia USA. She was also invited by DJ Ous of West Coast Radio with
one of the rising Gambian Reggae stars Heartbreaker. Her music is currently
being played by DJ Edu on BBC radio and also by the likes of many dj's across
the globe.
In December of '06, Amie was back in The Gambia where she had various shows and
was welcomed by The people of The Gambia. Currently Amie is working on an album
as well as collaborating with other Gambian musicians. "WE, the musicians, have
to put Gambian music on the map!" Amie’s love for the Gambia cannot be
overemphasized as she lives her complete life “the Gambian way”. In fact, she
has used the Gambian national anthem as a song which she opens her performances
with. “I love Gambia, I love the people, I love its beauty, it’s always home NO
MATTER WHAT, GAMBIA STAND UP!” expressed Amie. Credit for beat production: JTD
