Hamaleh G
Hamaleh G (local
word for 'enlightment) is a musical group of 3 vocalists: Alagie Mbye,
a.k.a. Fready Man, Modou Faal a.k.a Cliff Lion
and Lamin Mansal a.k.a Fricky L. These three young men
came together in 1999 to form Da Hamaleh G Crew. They
are currently working on their album 'Hit D Sea'. More information about

Best Cultural Group Award in the First Gambian Music Award in 1998.)
This crew got a
three album contract at Yellowgate studios where they already recorded
and released the first in line. After the release they went on a
country-wide tour. They were also featured on the 'Kairo: Songs of The
Gambia' compilation which gives an overview of the music in the country.
The group which features ex-radio comic Amie Cherie and three local
rappers and a Senegalese singer first released promo singles, `Bai Ma-Lamin
Darra' and `Joyleh-lenn' - Tribute to the late Ousu 'Lion' Njie. Their
act features a fusion of R&B, rap-ragga and mbalax, blended with some

Dembo Jobarteh
is a griot from Niani Kayai, The Gambia. Dembo was brought up in the
traditional griot way. He worked in the groundnut and
rice paddies, studying kora and drums in his spare time. At the age of
18 Dembo was a professional koraplayer and singer . He
went to Dakar, Senegal and played in restaurants and tourist markets.
After two years he came back to The Gambia. Here he founded the
Gambian Griot School of Music and Dance .
Dembo Jobarteh is a nephew of Amadu Bansang Jobarteh,
the famous kora-player and teacher of world music specialist Lucy Duran.
Amadu Bansang became well known for his album Tabara. Another famous

Nyang Njie
The name Ndey
Nyang may be new to many but not those who remember the one time very
popular Karantaba Band, the Mandingo Band or the Musa Kalamula and the
Gambian Band. Ndey started her
musical career in her early twenties with the Karantaba Band. She was
with the group until she met with Ousu 'Lion' Njie also a very popular
musician, who introduced her to Mandingo Band. After being with Mandingo
for barely two years she was awarded a contract together with Musa
Kalamula and the Gambian Band(a cultural music group) to travel to
Europe to promote Gambia River Excursions. After spending six months she
returned home to join Ousu 'Lion' Njie. |
