Dr Shaka was born on 12th October 1977 in the large town of Bakau
new Town in the Kombo St Mary’s Division in the Gambia situated in the west
coast of Africa. He attended Bakau New Town Primary School where he then
continued his education at St Augustines High School after receiving a
scholarship from the Queens Trust Fund. He excelled in all aspects of
academic life receiving top grades in class and was even moved up two school
years due to his abilities and opportunity to push himself further at the
academic level that he was on.
While studying at St Augustines High School Dr Shaka had access to school
bands and musical instruments. It was here at the age of fourteen that he
began to take music seriously and chose it as his future path in life. While
doing regular performances with the school band and co-ordinating with them,
Dr Shaka gained the name “ Junior Bob Marley” by his fellow band mates and
friends. This gave him the strength to proceed with his dreams, knowing that
he had support from those around him who knew he was extraordinary.
However his dream came one step closer in 1999 when he set up a reggae group
called Born Africans in which he was the lead vocalist. Born Africans quickly
gained popularity and became the biggest reggae group in Gambia and the Gambian
Reggae Music Ambassadors. Their popularity grew as did the peoples belief in the
words that were sung in their songs. Their debut album “Praises” went straight
to number one and won an award for “The Best Gambian Reggae Album” and
revolutionising the reggae music industry in Gambia. Dr Shaka has performed
alongside some of the biggest names in reggae such as Ijahman, Gregory Issac,
Antony B, Luciano, Luke Dube and many, many more.
Dr Shaka is Gambia’s answer to the legendary Bob Marley, giving hope as a role
model to the new generation of upcoming talents and with the release of the “No
More War” album he was able to lead a greater campaign for peace and stability
all over the world.
Although a few years later Born Africans broke away and Dr Shaka
went solo, migrating to England to further his prospects and career.
However he had to take a break from music after the births of his two daughters
and giving his time to make sure he could give them the best start in life.
After the break, he is currently recording with King’s Hifi in
Sussex. He has also recently recorded songs with the Roots Garden label in
Brighton including his new song “Good Vibes” and is also working on his third
album “Rise With Us”.
Dr Shaka has been an inspiration and brought hope to young and old people in the
Gambia and many other countries where his music has been released ( 16 to be
exact ). His words are able to influence the younger generation to grow up, not
with violence, hate and greed, but with love, peace and happiness.
Many say Dr Shaka is a musical doctor who heals people through his musical
talent and lyrics. He promotes spiritual consciousness and righteousness
worldwide spreading his philosophy of good over evil. He believes in freedom of
speech and movement for every living soul.
Through his much loved dancehall music he promotes equality and justice for one
and all and condemns the devils philosophy, but spreads the much needed message
of his Imperial Majesty, Almighty God, The Ruler Of All, King of Kings and Lord
of Lords.
Watch out for
this spiritual warriors new production for 2007 “Rise With Us”. It’s sure to be
a big one.
