Nancy
Nanz whose real name is Mammy Nancy Waggeh was born in Banjul on the 2nd
October 1986 at the street called Tobacco Road in The Gambia. Her father
is Ebou Waggeh a journalist who used to work at the Gambia Radio and
Television services (GRTS) and her mum is Ida Sosseh.
Nancy is a Muslim and rose in a well-cultured Muslim background. Her
great grand mother on her mum’s side was a great artist of her time who
was into acting and singing on cultural issues. She always sang for the
“Fanal” (Lanterns) during Christmas, New Year and other cultural
festivals.
Nancy is believed to have inherited her great grand mother’s musical
talents, she love music when she was young and going to school. Her
favourite artist is Beyonce Knowles old Destiny’s Child, she liked her
so much so that she endeavoured to manifest like her at a time in
dressing, dance and even tries to sing like her. Her schoolmates noticed
how much she was in love with Beyonce that they decided to give the name
“The Gambian Beyonce” and would normally call her to mime Beyonce songs
during school shows.
Her beauty and
captivating voice earned her the opportunity to be selected as the most
beautiful girl during the most popular Easter Carnival and Miss Princess
Gambia Shows organised by the 2-Rays Syndicate at the beach side. The
judges recognised two special things about her, which are her voice and
stunning mode of dressing and mesmerizing attitude.
She was given the
opportunity to do an accapella for the crowd with her own song. She
changed a song star (Beyonce) title “Baby Boy” remixed in a Wollof
version to better suit the Gambian audience, featuring DJ LIL SISQO AKA
(2-Rayz). From there she was taken by the C.E.O of 2-Rays Syndicate to
do her first studio recording and the song was played in Radio Stations
all over The Gambia. Her first live performance was at a Carnival
organised by the Lend A Hand Society, where she was introduce by her
producer and manage. This day was the day, her manager call breaking the
chains. Nancy then became a public icon and gain admirations even from
her worst enemies. She then recorded other killing songs like JIGAIN YII
N.A.N.C.Y, MUSIC and PARTY OVER HERE.
The N.A.N.C.Y
song is about herself and her future; it was recognised as one of the
top hit songs in the Gambia, even the children can sing along the
spelling of her name. The video is classic and the western style of
performance was highly appreciated by the viewers.

collaboration song “Follow Me TO Africa” with the Senegalese Rap star
FATA was selected by the sound city production for a compilation used in
sensitizing The Gambian population during the Banjul AU Summit. She
again did another sensitization song with the most talked about
Senegalese artist called “Pacotille” for The Gambia Electoral Commission
during the 2006 Presidential election.
Now Nancy is
working with her producer in releasing the most awaited album by the
fans. You have never seen a Gambian in this hype before. She is coming
to take over the airwaves, get her lyrics stick to the mind of the
people. She is going to take the Gambian Map on the Hollywood top ten.
