Qualification procedure
for the 2nd round and
3rd round for world Cup/
CAN 2010
17/06/2008,
TO NATIONAL ASSOCIATIONS PARTICIPATING AT THE 26TH EDITION OF THE AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS, ANGOLA 2010
Cairo, June 16, 2008
Mr. Secretary General,
We are pleased to
confirm to you the
procedure to be adopted
in order to determine
the best second at the
end of second round
matches taking place
now. As you are well
aware, 20 countries will
qualify for the third
round of the competition
mentioned above.
SECOND ROUND
Following the second
round, the 12 teams
ranked first are
automatically qualified
for the third round.
For the eight teams
ranked second, the
following system will be
adopted to rank
fairly teams ranked
second in the groups of
4 or 3:
For teams in groups of
four, a new
classification will be
made for teams ranked
second and will be taken
into account only their
results with teams
ranked first and third
in their respective
groups (total 4
matches). Results of
matches with the team
ranked fourth will not
be taken into
consideration.
For teams ranked second
in groups of three, it
will be taken into
account all their
matches
(4 matches ).
Once the ranking of teams, who finished second in their groups, is conducted then we can now determine the eight teams qualified to make the list of 20 teams for the third round.
It will be taken into account the greater number of points, the goal difference then the highest number of goals scored. If teams ranked eighth and ninth are in complete equality a playoff match will be organized in November .
THIRD ROUND
We would like to remind
you also that the 20
countries qualified for
the third round will be
drawn in five groups of
4 teams and the first
three teams in each
group will qualify for
the final tournament of
the 2010 CAN along the
organising country
(ANGOLA) .
It goes without saying
that for the group of
Angola, in case Angola
qualifies for the 3rd
round, the other three
teams in its group will
qualify automatically
for the CAN 2010. The
ranking of this group
will be done to
determine which team
will qualify for the
World Cup.
For the group of South
Africa, in case South
Africa qualifies for the
3rd round , We will have
then two separate
rankings. The
other three teams will
be ranked within the
group in order to
determine which team
will qualify for the
World Cup (this ranking
will not take into
account the results of
these teams with South
Africa). Another second
ranking will be carried
out with the four teams
taking into account all
the group's results to
determine the three
teams that will qualify
for CAN 2010. South
Africa must be at least
amongst the top three to
qualify for the Nations
Cup.
We hope to have clarified the procedure and we wish your teams the best of luck.
With our highest regards,
Mustapha Fahmy
The Secretary General
