Gambia Scorpions wins the second annual Minnesota African Soccer cup after humbling defending champions Liberia.
The scorpions wasted no time to let the Liberian team know that this time they were not going to settle for runner up. Outplaying the defending champions Liberia in a fast pace match of world class performance. Stinging them 3 - 0 at end of first half and sealing the victory with a 4th after the Liberians managed a consolation goal. The final score: Gambia 4, Liberia 1.
It was a very important win for The Gambia Scorpions as they missed out in 2008 after losing to this same side. So indeed a massive victory for Coach Sulayman (Sol) Njie , assistant coach Abdoulie Bojang and Team Captain Ebrima (Saul) Janneh.
Other countries that participated in this years’ tourney were: Liberia (2008 Champions), The Gambia (2008 Runner up), Guinea, Sierra Leone, Eritrea, and Ghana.
Best sportsmanship went to The Black Stars of Ghana. MVP of the tournament is Lamin B. Sambou (BIGA) of The Gambia with two goals in the finals.
The tournament was hosted by African Vision 360, an African organization in Minnesota that has a vision of a community where Africans can connect, contribute and lead the world. By educating Minnesotans and the media about Africa’s many diverse cultures and showing Africans how they can come together as one continent.
The event brings together Americans, Asians, Latino and African communities to network and celebrate their cultures, love for soccer and experience a new view of Africa.
Prominent sports, government and business personalities were invited to help promote the event. There was live music, dance and freestyle soccer skill event.
