MONROVIA,
Liberia — Dio Williams
and Oliver Makor scored
late goals and Liberia
rallied for a 2-2 draw
against Senegal on
Sunday in a World Cup
qualifier.
Senegal had taken the
lead in the 47th minute
through Ahaji Diouf and
Cheickh Gueye made it
2-0 in the 55th.
But Williams gave the home side hope with his goal in the 78th, before Makor equalized 10 minutes later.
The match was held in the Samuel K. Doe stadium, where at least 10 people were killed two weeks ago during another qualifier. Attendance had been reduced to 75 per cent in the 33,000-seat stadium, and dozens of United Nations and Liberian police were deployed to prevent a similar disaster.
During the June 1 match between Liberia and Gambia, a metal bar in the upper level broke under pressure from the crowd, causing dozens of people to fall onto spectators below.
The draw means Senegal and Gambia both have five points at the top of Group 6, while Liberia has two points.
