Gambian
youths have showed a lot of talents and represented their country throughout
United States in different sports like Basketball, Football (soccer), Athletics,
and so on. Recently, a young talented brother Alex Mendy (To-boy), based in
Tennessee/Maryland has been discovered. The 24 year old football player has
carried the name of his country in several occasions.
Born in Latri-Kunda, The Gambia, Mendy moved to the U.S at age
18 to finish his education. He spent a year at Montgomery College in Silver
Spring Maryland and during that time he played for the DC-Gambian football team
in many competitions and won the 2005 ALD and July 4th (Gambian tournament
played in Maryland and Atlanta) leading goals scorer trophy. During the 2003 ALD
tournament, a former Gambian national team player and a present NCAA Division II
coach Louie Thorp spotted Mendy playing. Shortly after that he started playing
for an NAIA Division I team King College (the school Thorp was coaching by then)
scoring goal after goal and becoming a star in the team.
In his first year with King, Mendy had a great performance.
His talent made him a leading scorer for the team with 16
goals and he was also selected in the 2nd All-Conference team. In his second
season, Mendy helped the team to win their first AAC championship in 18 years
and he again led the team in goals scored. Mendy had his best performance with
the team this year as he was awarded the golden booth trophy in the conference
and the region with 24 goals. He was also selected in the 1st team
All-Conference, and All-Regional, and was honored as one of the best NAIA
Division I forwards in the nation, along with other forwards including another
Gambian product Malang Jarju.
During summer 2006, Mendy played with some football legends in
a legendary match against MLS team Columbus Crew in Ohio. Some of these players
includes former Italian and Chelsea star Gianfranco Zola, former English and
present Manchester City star Andy Cole, Former English Midfielder Scot Seller,
former U.S goalkeeper and present Blackburn goalkeeper Brad Friedle, Blackburn’s
second goalkeeper Peter Ankleman, former U.S defender Desmond Armstrong and many
more.
Mendy is known for his quick pace and ability
to runs at defenders and goalkeepers with total confidence to get the ball past
them. He is fast with and without the ball, and
can make great decisions when it comes to finishing. He is also a hard worker
and a great leader as he is now captaining his
college team..
