Hare-y Christmas for Gambian schoolchildren |

SCHOOL football team in The Gambia are now sporting a new kit thanks to Hormead
Hares FC.
The Crow League club have donated a set of shirts to the Lamin-Daranka Primary
School in the African country.
Marge and Kevin Coleman, who are friends on Hares' treasurer Peter Worby, spent
Christmas in the country and took gifts for the local children in memory of
Marge's son Andy Lee who died two years ago, having suffered from brittle bone
disease."They asked if we had any Arsenal shirts my children no longer wanted as
everyone in The Gambia follows football" explained Peter.
"We didn't have any of those but what I did have was a complete Hormead Hares
kit in the loft and said they were welcome to take that.
"With the help of a guide they were put in touch with Lamin-Daranka Primary
School who were in need of a kit, the headmaster of the school got the children
in on Christmas day to be presented with their new shirts."The children were
delighted as they were the only team in the area who didn't have a set of
shirts. They immediately went out and had a game, and everyone at Hares is
delighted that we could help them out."- Only three of Hares teams saw their
games escape the weather over the weekend, with mixed results.
The under-nine Pumas dominated their match against Potton Colts from the kick
off despite the pouring rain and muddy pitch, but the game remained goalless at
half-time.In the second half, Sam Methven broke the deadlock with two quick
goals. A late fight back by Potton was snuffed out with Rob Lankester scoring a
spectacular volley from AJ Burton's well taken corner to give Pumas a 3-1 win.
The under-nine Cougars' inability to convert their chances proved costly as they
went down 4-0 against Potton despite a man-of-the-match performance from Jack
Shambrook. A late goal denied a depleted under-13 girls team victory at St Neots.
The opening 20 minutes saw Hormead play some outstanding football, full of pace,
power and excellent passing and found themselves three up with goals from Becky
Turner, Rachel Harris and Katie Jennings.
Unfortunately the rest of the second half Hares lost their discipline and
concentration and gifted St Neots two goals to give them hope for the second
half.
Following some changes at half-time, the first 10 minutes of the second half
were even, with some good defending from Kelsey Gilligan and Jessie Smith, but
as St Neots tired Hares created chance after chance with Kirsty Hill spraying
the ball around excellently creating a number of chances for Turner.
Hope Bayford-Smith and Gaby Hodgson both went close, and but for some
outstanding saves from the St Neots keeper Hares dominance would have been
reflected in the score, but again, as Hares launched another attack in the final
minute, St Neots broke quickly on the break and despite the best efforts of
keeper Sarah Bruerton, the hosts grabbed a share of the spoils.
