When
it comes to Gambians, Edrissa Sonko is probably up there with my very favourite,
writes Walsall blogger Ben Lowe. Our superb revival has been a team effort, no
question about that, but Sonko has played an integral part and deservedly opened
his Saddlers account with an excellent goal against Huddersfield on Saturday.
So what makes him so great? His nickname
‘Mr Sunshine’ and infectious smile for starters.
After spells with Belgian giants Anderlecht and Dutch outfit Roda JC, he penned
a one-year contract following a successful trial in the summer and showed
flashes of what he is capable of during pre-season.
His legs might be even thinner than Mark
Wright’s, but he is definitely an improvement on his predecessor.Sonko
has terrific pace as well as the ability to cross, which is exciting to watch
and will always strike fear into full-backs.
Many are hailing him as our best winger since Jeff Peron and, based on
his performances so far, I completely agree.He also has a fantastic work-rate;
anyone who gives their all for the club I am proud to follow is a hero in my
eyes.
It’s early days but sometimes you just get
a hunch about certain players and I get the feeling we’ve found a sparkler.I
would love to see the Gambian flag at home games to remind ‘Eddy’ of his
homeland in Western Africa. He has achieved his career ambition to play in
England but settling into this country is likely to take time.
Sonko was incredibly popular at his former
clubs and that’ll soon be the case at Walsall if he’s able to maintain his
current form throughout the campaign
