Music Industry Booming in Gambia |
Gone are the days when The Gambia was seen as lightweight in the world
of music industry in the West African sub-region, said Mr Freedom Lamz,
a Gambian artist based in Sweden in an interview with this reporter
recently.
“The Gambia can now pride itself of having countless number of
international artists who are self-taught,” he added.
“Thanks to their creativity and dynamism, the plethora of artists in the
country has profoundly put The Gambia in a good stead to compete with
other artists in any music showcase around the globe.”
Among the profound and accomplished artists that have firmly stamped
their feet in the music industry in The Gambia is Mr Freedom Lamz.
A native of Siffoe in Kombo South, Mr Lamz said his passion for real
African music has motivated him to dwell in four well-known and
top-rated music lyrics such as hip-hop, soul music, R ‘n’B, and Reggae.
He later joined forces with other artists in the diaspora to set up a
music industry in Sweden called Freestyla Records, which is making waves
in the music scene in that country.
This trendy music house of which Mr Freedom is the Executive Director,
is engaged in recording CD cassettes for sale.
Speaking about the music industry in The Gambia, Mr Freedom said Gambian
musicians are doing extremely well, adding that little bit of
encouragement and support can motivate them to do wonders in the music
arena.
He said he plans to support and promote Sillah & African Prestige Band
to an international level because the proprietor of the band, Mr Sillah,
“delivers good music” and immensely contributes in the Gambian music
industry.
Meanwhile, Mr Freedom and his wife, Louis Carisson, are in the country
for a two-week holiday Carisson, also known as Ayshalou, is expected to
release her first single in Sweden late 2006.
