Residents
in the
Greater
Banjul
Area in
the
Gambia
have
expressed
their
frustration
over the
continuous
leakage
of Water
from
pipes
within
the area
in
recent
time.
Concerned
about
the
danger
the
leakage
poses to
health,
the
residents
Friday
called
on the
National
Water
and
Electricity
Company
(NAWEC)
to take
immediate
action
to stop
the
leakages.
They say
the
water
leakage
is
likely
to be
contaminated
and can
make
people
vulnerable
to
diseases
like
cholera.
According
Pa
Bojang
of New
Jeshwang
area,
the
leaking
is a
cause
for
concern
that
needs
quick
response.
He said
water
had been
leaking
from the
pipes in
the past
one year
without
any
measures
taken by
Water
and
Electricity
Company.
He said
“We have
reported
the
problem
to them
but we
are yet
to see
any any
meas
ures to
solve
the
problem,
we
cannot
compromise
such a
serious
issue.
"Why are
they
reluctant
to
resolve
the
problem.”
A woman
who
identified
herself
as
simply
Oumie
accused
NAWEC of
being
negligent
in the
performance
of their
duties.
“They
are
eager to
disconnect
any
landlord
that
owes
them,
but they
don’t
want to
provide
good
service
for the
people.
"NAWEC
should
know
that
this
problem
should
not be
taken
for
granted,”
she
complained.
Alieu
Bah of
Manjai
Kunda
said
their
streets
are
flooded
with
water
from the
leaking
pipes,
adding
that
these
water
had been
stagnant
in
certain
areas
within
th e
greater
Banjul
for
several
months.
An
official
in NAWEC
who
wished
to
remain
anonymous
acknowledged
that
there
were so
many
leaking
water
pipes in
the
Greater
Banjul
Area.
He said
most of
the
pipes
were
buried
for over
30
years.
"These
pipes
are too
old, I
would
like to
apologise
to the
public
on
behalf
of the
Company,
and we
are
working
on it
and the
situation
would be
resolved
soon.
