DEA edges RTCA in overtime thriller

A much anticipated showdown between top ranked David Emanuel Academy and defending state champion Robert Toombs lived up to its pre-game hype last Friday night in Lyons. The Eagles and the Crusaders battled each other for four quarters, and through four minutes of overtime, before DEA came away with a thrilling 63-62 win before a packed house at RTCA.

With the win, DEA remains undefeated for the season while continuing to be ranked as the number one team in the Georgia Independent School Association's Class A division. RTCA falls to 9-4 overall with the loss, their second in region play.

"We came out and played the first half awfully tight and fell behind by double digits early," said DEA Head Coach Stacy Sikes. "The little six point spurt right before the half was very important. This will definitely make us a stronger team for the future. To win on the road against the defending state champions says a lot about our kids."

Clifford Byrd led the Eagles with 22 points while Jared Flowers tossed in 16 points and pulled 11 rebounds and Dawda Njie finished with 12 points, 14 rebounds and six blocked shots. Joseph Sparks with seven points, Logan Salter with four points, ten rebounds and seven assists and Greg Glover with two points also contributed to the win for DEA. Torey Dixon led all scorers with 25 for Robert Toombs with Jon Herrington and Matthew Parker each netting 14.

The Eagles ran their overall record to 14-0 and 6-0 in region play with a 77-27 pasting of Twiggs Academy Saturday night in Stillmore. A balanced scoring attack was led by Clifford Byrd and Greg Glover, each with 14 points. Brandon Blount finished with a season high 13 points while Casey Clark finished with 12. Logan Salter with nine Dawda Njie with eight, Joseph Sparks with four and Justin Smith with three all scored in the win. No one for Twiggs reached double figures.

"Our starters did a good job of coming out and putting this game away early, which allowed them to get some much needed rest after a hard game on Friday," said Sikes. "The subs came in and all played well. I'm proud of each and every kid on this team."

DEA began the basketball week by blasting Citizens Christian Academy 97-54 in Stillmore last Tuesday night. Three Eagles all scored twenty plus points led by Clifford Byrd with 29 and Joseph Sparks and Logan Salter with 20 each. Greg Glover with eight, Dawda Njie with six, Brandon Blount with five, Jared Flowers with four, Casey Clark with three, John Mark Sweat with two and Hudson Johnson with one all joined the scoring parade as well. Byrd had eight assist and five steals and Salter had eight rebounds four assists and three steals. Cameron Cole and Thomas Bennett both had ten points for CCA.

"This was our best effort of the season" commented Coach Sikes after the win. "Three of the five starters had 20 or more points and that is what we have going for us. Teams that we play have to worry about all five players on the floor, not just one or two."

DEA will travel to Louisville to take on Thomas Jefferson on Tuesday, Jan. 23.
